The Browser Company will shut down its Arc browser on December 22, 2026. The company had already moved on to developing Dia last year but had continued to maintain Arc. On December 22, the macOS and Windows apps will stop working, all Arc accounts will be deactivated, and Arc Search for Android will be pulled from Google Play. The shutdown began in stages: new Arc accounts can no longer be created, and on November 23, 2026, iOS and Android users will lose Browse for Me and other AI features, as well as sign-in and tab syncing. All account data will be deleted 30 days after the December 22 shutdown.
The Browser Company is directing users to Dia, its newer AI-focused browser. The company says passwords, bookmarks, extensions, history, Spaces, Folders, and Tab Groups will import into Dia. The latest Arc release can export data for later import into Dia. Dia is free, and The Browser Company says the Arc features users rely on are free in Dia, with AI tools optional. The company also said its security team is now focused on Dia, which it built from the ground up to meet today's security standards.
CEO Josh Miller said last year that Arc was not as popular as the company hoped and that it was "simply too different" without enough incentives to switch. At the time, the company announced an end-of-life plan but did not give a shutdown date. Users who do not move to Dia can consider Chromium-based browsers such as Opera, Microsoft Edge, and Brave, or Gecko-based browsers including Firefox, Tor Browser, and Zen Browser. The Zen browser is a common suggestion for those wanting an experience like Arc. Atlassian acquired The Browser Company for $610 million last year. OpenAI also discontinued its AI-focused Atlas browser this year, opting for ChatGPT's built-in browser instead.
