Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro arrives this week

9to5Mac expects the redesigned 14-inch OLED touch model to start at $2,999, while current M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros stay in the lineup.

Apple will release its first touchscreen MacBook Pro this week, according to 9to5Mac. That step reverses years in which Apple kept touchscreens off its laptops.

After the release, the MacBook Pro line will have three tiers, according to 9to5Mac. The base model will keep the current 14-inch design with an M6 chip and has lesser thermals. The middle tier will keep the currently sold 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips unchanged. The top tier will be the new redesigned OLED touchscreen models with lighter designs and M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

For pricing, 9to5Mac expects the upcoming M6 14-inch model to keep the current M5 14-inch model's $1,999 price. At that price, the machine would include 1TB of storage and 16GB of unified memory, though 9to5Mac said a 512GB base tier could return. The site noted that Apple brought back 256GB as the Mac mini's base storage amount earlier this year after a brief discontinuation.

Across the wider MacBook lineup, 9to5Mac listed expected prices that place the new models at the top: MacBook Neo at $699, MacBook Air 13-inch at $1,299, MacBook Air 15-inch at $1,499, the M6 MacBook Pro 14-inch at $1,999, the existing 14-inch and 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max versions at $2,499 and $2,999, and the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch at $2,999 and $3,499. The redesign prices are guesses, the site said.

The existing M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models will likely keep their current prices of $2,499 for the 14-inch and $2,999 for the 16-inch. 9to5Mac cited Omdia's report that the existing miniLED displays will remain in production through 2028, suggesting those models may stay in the lineup for a while.

For the top-of-the-line redesigned models, 9to5Mac predicted prices of $2,999 for the 14-inch and $3,499 for the 16-inch, but emphasized these are guesses. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the redesigned models will fetch a "significantly higher" price, and 9to5Mac said the new models' starting prices could be higher than those predictions.

The new OLED touch MacBook Pros are reportedly "significantly lighter," according to 9to5Mac. They will include a Dynamic Island, OLED, and touch displays, and could potentially support cellular connectivity. 9to5Mac called this the first substantial redesign of the MacBook Pro since 2021.

9to5Mac said that keeping the older models around likely indicates the new models will start at high prices.

Update, October 26, 2026

India Today reported, citing Bloomberg, that Apple will announce the touchscreen MacBook Pro at its “Pro and tell” event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, at 10 a.m. Pacific time. Attendees are expected to get hands-on time with the laptops after the announcement, which may come through a press release, according to the publication. The report added that touch support will work for gestures like scrolling, pinching, panning, zooming and swiping, while the keyboard and trackpad remain central, and that macOS Golden Gate will adapt controls based on whether the user was touching the screen or the trackpad. The new models are expected to sit above the existing high-end MacBook Pros and cost significantly more.

Update, October 28, 2026

Apple announced its first touchscreen MacBook Pro at its “Pro and tell” event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, The Verge reported. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399, with preorders open today and release on November 6.

The laptops use M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, not the M6 in the other new MacBook Pros, and have a tandem OLED screen Apple calls “PROLED XDR.” Apple says the display reaches up to 2,000 nits of peak SDR brightness and a 120Hz refresh rate. The touch sensor is built into the display panel rather than layered on top, which Apple claims reduces latency. The 14-inch weighs 3 pounds and has a 14.2-inch screen; the 16-inch weighs 4 pounds and has a 16.3-inch screen. Battery life is up to 24 hours.
