Budget phones now pack 6,500 to 8,500mAh batteries

Chinese budget phones now carry up to 8,500mAh cells, far above the 5,000mAh norm of Samsung and Google.

The move to multi-day budget batteries became concrete in 2026. Stuff reported on April 14, 2026, that the Poco X8 Pro and X8 Pro Max had joined its latest releases; the Pro Max has an 8,500mAh battery and the X8 Pro a 6,500mAh cell, both larger than the batteries in pricier phones from Samsung, Google and Apple. Android Central's guide reported that the POCO F7, in its India version, packs a 7,550mAh battery. Stuff added on September 29, 2026, that Oppo's Find X10, revealed in China in September, carries an 8,000mAh battery.

The reason is silicon-carbon battery chemistry. Stuff's FAQ explains that Chinese brands were early to adopt silicon-carbon, which lets them massively increase capacity compared with the lithium-ion batteries in Apple, Google and Samsung phones. Android Authority's guide makes the same point: silicon-carbon is "making it possible to increase capacity without increasing size".

There is still a size trade-off. Android Authority notes that bigger batteries require more space, so phone size and battery life are in tension. Silicon-carbon helps by making it possible to increase capacity without increasing size.

A bigger cell also changes how long the phone stays useful. Android Authority says a larger launch battery helps the phone keep lasting a full day as the cell loses capacity over time. Its guidance: 4,000mAh is a reasonable baseline, 5,000mAh is comfortable for power users, and phones near or above 6,000mAh are likely to last most users well into a second day. The 7,550mAh and 8,500mAh cells in these budget models therefore target two days per charge, and Stuff says the X8 Pro Max "comfortably lasts two days per charge".

By contrast, most budget models from Samsung and Google still sit around 5,000mAh. Android Central lists the Galaxy A17 at 5,000mAh and the A26 at 5,000mAh. Google's Pixel 10a is 5,100mAh. So the 7,000-plus class is a Chinese-led jump.

User demand is explicit: Android Authority opened its battery guide with, "If there's one thing we all want from our next smartphone, it's more battery life". Chinese manufacturers have turned silicon-carbon into a differentiator, while Apple, Google and Samsung have stayed with lithium-ion. Stuff predicts that "until rivals catch up, Chinese handsets will be the gold standard for battery life".
